In my case at least that wasn't the reason I had to teach myself. E.g. there were no classes using Lisp at Cornell in 1983. If there were I'd gladly have taken them.
That’s what I mean. When people want to learn they will find a way and absorb at an incredible rate, classes or not. When forced by a set curriculum that often doesn’t have meaning, it is far less effective. My kids mostly choose everything they want to learn. It’s wonderful.
