Politics should only decide the answers to questions that can't be answered by research. If you want a heuristic for detecting extremists (on both the far left and the far right), this could be the most effective.

Scientists don’t have any skin in the game (i.e. they don’t have to face consequences if wrong decisions are being made based on their data). How to reconcile that?

The problem is that people, dependent on their political views, have different conclusions from the same data or make different choices. Even if it’s a sincere difference of opinions, a values based difference, partisans on both sides accuse the conclusion as evil.
