Something I didn't realize as a kid: If you learn something that matters a lot to you, you'll surprisingly often have to teach yourself. I had to teach myself Lisp, how to write essays, and how to start a startup. I had examples to work from, but no teachers or classes.

I also had to teach myself how to be an investor, and here having no teachers was an advantage. Because we didn't know how to be angel investors, we reinvented the wheel, and this new wheel had some valuable new features, like funding startups in batches.

Or you can flip it and say people don’t really learn when they are not ready or really interested.

The easiest way to learn is to nurture your curiosity. That way you can learn for the sake of learning, without any particular goals in mind. The problem with schools is that you learn in pursuit of goals i.e good grades.

        Daniel O'Connor Retweeted Naval

Reminds me of Naval's tweet about "specific knowledge":https://twitter.com/naval/status/1002104947624722433 …

        Daniel O'Connor added,

        Naval @naval
Specific knowledge is knowledge that you cannot be trained for. If society can train you, it can train someone else, and replace you.

The amount of good schooling can do might be overrated but the amount of harm bad schooling can do is underrated.
