Everything's ok now. Turned out 8 yo had always wanted an x-ray. He'd been disappointed by boring dental x-rays. So he was excited to go to the hospital, and now he has a satisfyingly large bandaged thumb and gets to have all the candy and TV he wants.

I had an x-ray in my thirties and the doctor asked me about a broken toe. I didn't know I had broken a toe. I guess my parents just blew some air on my toe and this fixed it.

I sliced open my foot jumping barefoot from a sea dyke at age 12. Doctor called it a "wound," which I thought was pretty cool until I sat down in the waiting room next to a guy with a missing arm. And just like that, my "wound" lost its cachet.

Um... any parent with a smidge of medical training would know that. I married one of the first women athletic trainers and she diagnosed both of my son's broken bones.

I had a broken thumb at around the same age. For some reason we were competing on who could lift the heaviest rock.
Funnily enough, I didn't feel bummed out for long either. And the best part was my parents coming to personally pick me up after every exam. -
I remember feeling so smug about getting to leave early. Can almost picture the smile I'd give my classmates as I walked by them.
