Pitch contests are not merely useless, but actively misleading, because they train people that the audience they have to convince is investors, when actually it's customers.

It can happen, but the probability of it happening is so low that most founders would be ill-advised to make this the default plan. My advice would be to only consider this route if you're an amazing con artist, and that if you're not sure if you're one, you're not.
