I've had to tell a lot of founders not to care so much about investors' opinion of them. I have never once told a founder not to care so much about customers' opinion of them.

Kinda. But, don't you think there is some material benefit to getting people acclimatised to public speaking and selling (even if in a basic form)?

I think that's over-stating it. Is it a 1:1 experience? Probably not. But I think when teaching kids to become startup Founders it's just as important for them to experience the thought process early on. They can worry about the details if they are truly interested.
