To step back further: how much is created by the incentives facing media companies & platforms? Polarization is better for engagement & ratings. If all forms of media are being hyper-optimized for engagement, how do reasonable outlets gain attention share?
One partial solution might be to create a politically neutral news source intended only for people smart enough to want one. Sort of like the NYT used to be. It wouldn't reach everyone, but the people it did reach would be disproportionately powerful.

Perfect neutrality may be hard to achieve, but the NYT of, say, 1990 is an existence proof that you can get a lot closer than papers do now.
