Employers should ask job applicants to send in their CVs without their degree or educational institution listed—just their skills. They could start doing that now.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1272805907366281217 …

I didn't focus much on how to decrease or mitigate polarization. I was just trying to understand the causes of it. But it's time now to start thinking about how to deal with it, or God knows what the US will look like in another 10 years.

Things are already heading this way in Silicon Valley. Employers have found that degrees are a weak predictor of technical ability, and increasingly ignore them in favor of coding tests and looking at applicants' published open-source code.

Paul, I’m a self taught coder with no degree, and for whatever reason, I rarely get even a coding challenge back from a job application. Are you sure about this? I’m in vancouver bc so maybe the culture is different. I’d like to know if it’s just that my github sucks basically

Plus new organizations like Lambda School, which focus just on teaching programming without the country club aspects of college, are big engines of social mobility. In fact Quillette should write something about Lambda. They're right up your alley.

All the colleges are dumping mandatory tests, including Harvard making the SAT optional yesterday. How's the disparate impact of coding tests?

Degrees are required for quite a few visa classes. No degree as a requirement for job will limit pool to US applicants. But ultimately I agree.

So called technical ability generally results in crap code & solutions which generally have to be remediated & increase system support. Targetting coders like a conveyor belt production line is short sited, educated coders have a longer career future
