I had long suspected that the reason for the NYT's sharp leftward shift was that highly partisan articles drive subscriber signups, but this is the first confirmation I've seen from inside the business. https://www.thedailybeast.com/new-york-times-publisher-ag-sulzberger-laments-loss-of-a-talent-like-james-bennet …pic.twitter.com/Nk9NqMMAxG

As Benedict Evans pointed out, it was supposed to be ad-based business models that drove polarization, but apparently subscription-based models do too. Alarming possibility: What if it's simply being online that drives polarization?

That’s partly true. It’s also due to journalist that work at NYT & virtually all high caliber news outlets regardless of the outlets leanings. Journalist are more likely to lean liberal, be highly educated, come from top 20% of income bracket, attend elite college, etc

Not that I’m against any of this. But ones bias can impact their work. 🤷🏽‍♂️

It’s also a generational shift - AG Sulzberger is a millennial taking over from more conservative prior editors. I expect every newspaper to reflect the biases of editors-there is no neutral news, just different stories from a subset of facts. The FT and WSJ are good counters.

I suspect the audience for non-partisan content is quite modest.

The other side is just as likely to wreck the country - i.e. Fox News. Not defending the Times bias, but just making sure we aren't being biased in our judgements either
