Advice extremely focused on short-term results helps the median startup but hurts exceptional startups.

Agree with this more. It’s more about when to me. In fact this is still true for small orgs in large cos imo.

With sincere respect. Maybe Airbnb is median and not exceptional?

Median startup is out of business within a few years.

I think it’s always about making sure your short-term actions don’t preclude your long-term success. One you know that kill it with your ST plan

Brealey-Myers (corporate finance text, read 10+ yrs ago, https://www.amazon.com/Principles-Corporate-Finance-Richard-Brealey/dp/0073405108 …) I think cited a study showing "bad" focus on short-term results actually *improves* long-term performance. So evidence might be on your (pg's) side here.

Honest question: you guys don’t get bored talking about startups sometimes?

Not yet! It's such an infinitely complicated topic.

There may be an arc of evolution to a startup just as does to a person. Perhaps Airbnb was a median co when the short-term advice worked well and once it became an exceptional co, it no longer worked as well?

Maybe in one case "results" is closer in meaning to "revenue" and in the other it means "growth" and therefore those two are not directly comparable?

Maybe you took Airbnb from median to exceptional and by then naturally stopped focusing on short term?
