In the USA, at least, there are lots of square fields to accommodate a style of irrigation equipment. Flying over agricultural areas, you see giant squares containing green circles and uncultivated corners.

My understanding (teaching back into when I studied the British agricultural revolution) was that this was due to share cropping. When the local landowner let out strips of their land in exchange for a share of the produce.

But the inheritance explanation is probably also valid.

I always wondered about this. Taking a flight across Europe it’s quite stark how different regions/countries divide up their land. The UK for instance, doesn’t have strips like the one in the picture.
