Politics has replaced religion. (Obviously not for everyone, but for a lot of people.)

EG heresies, fervor at big sermons, pressure to believe the whole thing and a general all-or-nothing mentality, fealty, excommunications, moralities, redemption, authoritarianism, rituals, high switching costs, crusades, etc... This seems true for both major US parties.

I think there's more religious fervor on the left and more tribalism on the right. Both bad (and specifically, anti-rational) of course. But you don't see the sort of hair-splitting doctrinal disputes on the right that you do on the left.

Which is why it's easier for the right to win...

Yes, unfortunately. Most of the energy on the left is devoted to fighting other people on the left.

Why is tribalism anti-rational? A-rational maybe, but not anti-rational

Because the world is crowded now. We're interdependent whether we like it or not. Different situation, different survival skills.

'The Righteous Mind' by @JonHaidt is a great read that explores this phenomenon.

It'd be nice if Twitter allowed for the creation of curated feeds where curators manually add and remove members. It's impossible to have good faith conversations on Twitter. A more private option would give the center an escape from the insanity.
