What if the “marketplace of ideas” doesn’t work at like John Stuart Mills conception of it? What if his 19th century experience of it was deeply dependent on a cultural inheritance even then rapidly diminishing, but on its own it is systematically subject to pathologies?

I sometimes feel as if we are experiencing the epistemic equivalent of the obesity crisis, our evolved cultural practices, mental faculties and appetites did not adapt for such tasty food or alluring ideas
