I guess I think differences between it and most other social media efforts are different by a constant factor and while the differences matter in the micro, it is likely the absence of twitter would have been filled by another effort equally "unique" when it comes to the macro.

Twitter cuts the middle man. Good for meeting interesting folks. Better for rabble-rousing. Without twitter (SM) the interesting folks would still have met on forums. But massive rabble-rousing would have been much much harder.
