It's weird how after being a user for 10 years I still can't tell whether Twitter is net good or bad for the world. On one hand there are Twitter mobs, and Trump saying he might not have won without it. And yet I've learned so much and "met" so many interesting people.

It's very common for the first version of some technology to be broken. E.g. the initial design of the de Havilland Comet. But network effects mean the first version persists for a long time. So for all we know, we're flying on planes that blow up, and treating it as normal.

Didn't say it was the canonical successor, only that it, like blogs and Facebook and the net itself, allows people who were not heard in mass media to speak. That is a step change. How each technology, including printing, is executed and sustained obviously has impact.

It seems likely the internet in general is net good. It's specific social media sites I'm less certain about.
