This @WSJ report is absolutely devastating. Why was New York hit worse than any other state by COVID-19? The answer is state and local public policy. https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-new-yorks-coronavirus-response-made-the-pandemic-worse-11591908426?emailToken=e803a6ed9274cdae568051846cf1b940HOht26qnGOlpu69cYNSmdFH/Kj2tn1Ih5R47EiRvUY0lEohddjQmvJsTeyfOfONZI8OpRUgVdEmZJKT9m4oR/MUMH78PaAYiBaBYFyu0brVbeF2VjgY/Gmn/HsUcLocq&reflink=article_copyURL_share …pic.twitter.com/gEUVx7Oz6T

Surely the real problem is that they simply had a higher rate of infection to start with?

Seems plausible that all of the above including infection rate, taken together with some things left unstated, are the “real” problem.

That and other factors like population density. Their policies definitely did not help, however. And then, there were hybrid issues like the subway. Keeping them running was a mixture of circumstantial constraints and policy problems.

Exactly. The bullet points discuss treatment flaws and none of them could plausibly explain the much higher base rates in the population.

Cuomo’s nursing home policy is absolutely an issue. DeSantis handled it so much better. Will the media tell you that?

Higher than Taipei or Tokyo or Seoul? Quite a lot had to go wrong here, though I suspect demographics were a large factor. Obesity, sickness, vitamin d deficiency. But institutional failures explain a lot. Many other places were simply better organized and smarter.

The governors of New York and Florida made opposite calls on which institutions to prioritize: hospitals or nursing homes. Cuomo chose to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed, including off-loading possibly still-infectious patients to nursing homes.https://www.takimag.com/article/the-nature-of-the-virus/ …

I doubt if I would have made a better decision than Cuomo did on whether to prioritize hospitals or nursing homes, but DeSantis deserves real credit for choosing the opposite of what the Conventional Wisdom told him to do at the time.
