Usually it's hard for a new startup to catch a company with a lead like Zoom has, but Zoom's links with China could give a competitor a toehold, and a toehold is all you need. So if you're thinking of starting a competitor, it might work.https://twitter.com/NAChristakis/status/1271030402086551553 …

Zoom censors video talks on Hong Kong and Tiananmen, drawing criticism over China links. In light of this, I’ll be asking ⁦@Yale⁩ if it wants to continue using ⁦@zoom_us⁩. It would seem incompatible with our values. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/zoom-censors-video-talks-on-hong-kong-and-tiananmen-drawing-criticism/2020/06/11/0197dc94-ab90-11ea-a43b-be9f6494a87d_story.html …

If you do start a Zoom competitor though, make sure it's actually better. It's not enough simply not to be under the thumb of China.

Thanks to the coronavirus, there must be a *lot* of programmers out there now with ideas about how to make a better Zoom. Tip: start by making what you yourself want. Don't worry, there will be other people who want it too. And all you need is a toehold.

How this story ends: Zoom fixes the China problem and/or we learn to ignore it, as we do so many China problems. But in the meantime someone is encouraged enough by it that they overcome their fear of competing with Zoom, make something better, and win in the end because of that.

Jitsi is open source and already does a lot of things better. Someone could skin it and have a competitor in a box. Making it 10-100x better though would involve creating a better version of straight video chat.

This goes for product designers, too.

Google and Microsoft already have these products...and can’t compete.

UX is bad for Teams. Google Meet has the UX, but doesn't have the performance of Duo.

Very hardest thing Zoom did was making it work consistently well. Nobody, not google or apple or mozilla have been able to crack this nut with the same level of consistent quality.

This so much. Even just getting my bluetooth mic to pair properly is a pain on Slack and Skype still.
