The US also has for profit prisons who can use prisoners are free labor.

A major blindspot in the post is how market incentives and cronyism lead to lobbying for more and more prisons and laws that easily throw people in jail.

I wonder how much of this is driven by wages and/or lower training requirements? If you lower pay and require less costly training you can scale up a large police force cheaply that’ll probably wreck havoc.
-
From the article, "What is surprising is that on a per-capita basis we employ 35% fewer police than the world average." So lower wages and training requirements can't explain it all.

Would be interested to see what the US police spending to prison ratio would be if this accounted for gear obtained through the 1033 program

Yes...so we should also be imprisoning less people (and fix the prison system which is incredibly racist and disgusting) AND defunding the police (which will help decrease the prison system). This shows Europe needs to defund its police as well.

Um the US also imprisons waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy more people than most, which is common knowledge. Expenditures per capita adjusted by pricing level would allow better comparison.

I would have thought that we spend a lot on both. In Baltimore, I'm pretty sure that the city's largest budget item is law enforcement. I'll check that...
-
Baltimore City budget was about $2.9b for 2020, with $530m for police ...and about $375m for schools.
