The dirty secret about the Ivy League is that they could easily replace their entire incoming class with students they rejected and still be the same. Probably a few times over.

Not quite. 5-10% of the kids are measurably smart math hotshots, and there is no replacement for those. What you say is true of the median student though.

Do you think the math hotshot rate would be that much lower among their barely-rejected group? Your tweet makes it sound like that are good at identifying/accepting the hotshots. Are they?

Yes, but because math hotshots are more easily identifiable.

College math works well as a Zoom class. If you could poach the top 15 math lecturers from Stanford, Ivies etc, could you bundle their prestige as a pure math online degree with actual signaling value?

I suspect they are (by other math people? or maybe awards/accolades are enough?). I assumed Ivy League admissions departments didn't go that deep, but I really have no idea how they work.

Ivy leagues need maths hotshots more than math hotshots need ivy leagues. Prestigious colleges add little to career incomes in the stem careers, compared to lib/biz degrees. Newton’s laws are identical at every university, and gladwells “big fish/small pond” comes into play imo
