Sharing an article can spark conversation, so you may want to read it before you Tweet it. To help promote informed discussion, we're testing a new prompt on Android –– when you Retweet an article that you haven't opened on Twitter, we may ask if you'd like to open it first.

What percentage of articles are retweeted without being read? More than half?

I bet if you checked Hacker News data, more than half of comments are from people who didn't read the article.

HN doesn't track that. The links to articles are just plain links. It was an idea we used to talk about occasionally, but we never did anything about it.

(Plus, it would be misleading. People often show up after having seen the article elsewhere.)

A strong signal that I suspect no network is using is the time interval between clicking and upvoting. All viral systems have a bias towards things that can be spread quickly which results in facile content dominating. Correcting for that would yield more wholesome dynamics.

Data would be skewed. I always read the comments first to avoid reading garbage articles. It’s why I goto HN.

@paulg time to reconsider it? A lot of people would like to help to add features for HBN, including me.

http://Readup.com  enables comments only after an article has been read—articles are ranked daily by number of completed “reads” and they aim for a community of deep readers, thinkers, and discussers.
