Counter argument: this benefit is far outweighed by the sheer distraction level of offices, at least with open floor planshttps://twitter.com/paulg/status/1270622556098355201 …

One of the biggest things lost in remote work is chance meetings. These are very important, but hard to quantify. If you measure productivity on individual projects, everything will seem fine. Yet when you read stories of how things happened, chance meetings were often crucial.

For sure. I'd hate working all day in an open plan office.

Well. Non-remote doesn't mean open space...

I can focus even in the middle of a crossroad, but I see the problem for many. IMO, offices could set up kitchen-like zoom rooms where people can enter and talk to each other without a goal in mind. I bet that the video chat world will evolve a lot in a short time.

Oh yeah. My only open office experience was terrible and stifling for chance meetings. I would text the person next to me if they wanted to do a coffee run so we wouldn’t disturb others. But hey, everyone could see if Jeff was having a bad day!

I was yelled at because there was a ping pong table close to where the dev and QA teams sat and I hid the balls. I was literally like “we are a fucking software company and we cannot ship code because you are screaming and playing this and being selfish. “
