This is it: Unbundle the Police https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2020/06/why-are-the-police-in-charge-of-road-safety.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter … Policing is a huge bundle of services, the vast majority of which simply don’t require threat of force or violence AT ALL.https://twitter.com/DKThomp/status/1269745166493024257 …

I'll end where I started: Policing is a bundle. The challenge before the Defund movement is separating the most toxic parts of the bundle without destroying services whose abolition will doom the project, politically. pic.twitter.com/tuDaYuBJlr

Great name descriptively, especially in the tech world where everyone knows this concept. But will it work with ordinary voters?

Sorry, fellow white folks. The slogan is out there. It's decided. The movement is named. It wasn't up to us. Black activists did the hard work on the ground and named their plan #DefundThePolice . Now our job is to learn and explain, not to co-opt and dilute its message.

great question. my answer is: no, almost certainly not. it's a clarifying frame, but not a galvanizing slogan. activist maximalism is appropriate for activism ... but academics/journalists/lawmakers etc need non-activist frames too

Maybe the right phrase for voters, if you want a broad consensus, is "modernize the police." That is in fact what unbundling would do, so it's not misleading.

Unbundle is also familiar to people who don't like their cable plan and actually read up on options.

"Unbundle the police" is an example of tech people thinking jargon is clearer than plain English. Replace. Abolish. Rebuild. Dismantle. All have plain meaning. Camden is where this was implemented. Not speaking plainly looks like you are unsure of the goal.

@tylercowen I do remember reading a paper about the correlation between the increase of cars and highways (mobility) and crime in the US. It explains nothing; if anything perhaps the govt’s justification for police patrolling traffic.
