Silicon Valley is the definition of a long term game Succeeding at long term games requires long term strategies So I'll never understand why people trade long term reputation for short term gains, ie exploding term sheets, reputational threats during negotiation etc So odd
I think these customs are left over from the days when news about misdeeds didn't travel as far or as fast.

Yes. Previously playing short term games’s downside was not as big as today. You could play with one node, screw It up, maybe get some reward, and move on to the next node. In a highly connected world, reputation is fragile.
