Back when AWS first launched, one of the speakers who came to YC said he thought it was a stupid idea. He asked how many of the founders used it. About 80% of them raised their hands. He changed his mind on the spot.
If the startups in a YC batch use some product, that has historically been a near perfect predictor that it will succeed. They're good judges of technology, and highly motivated to pick things that will work.

It's not merely a predictor though. Startups in the batch that are making tools can use this phenomenon in real time to refine their product. It's good enough when, and only when, they can get the other startups in the batch to use it.
