"The Art of Doing Science and Engineering" by Hamming is great, but the actual quality of the physical book is so much better than typical that I looked up the publisher -- I had no idea that https://press.stripe.com/  was a thing!

You should write a book for them. It would be a good thing for the world. It doesn't have to be big. Just something you've always wanted to write about, but that would take a little more than an essay to cover. (Shouldn't he @patrickc and @collision?)

I second this, strongly. Between Id and Armadillo and Oculus, there is no way that @ID_AA_Carmack doesn’t have a great book hiding inside his brain.

I second this. I want to read about the way you tackle problems. Your process. And the many things you've learnt along the way -- while building Doom, Quake, Oculus and now AGI. That would be awesome!

Part of why Hamming book works is because he has deep experience across so many technical fields over so many years alongside so many geniuses, such that the lessons drawn turn out to be uniquely interesting. You then wonder “well, who *today* could do that?”...

Probably nobody, right? The depth of technical fields are growing fast and tough to imagine someone with a wide set of experience can create any meaningful lessons. The one possible area that may nurture such kind of experience and mindset is startups.
