It’s kinda crazy it can take 10 years of research to make the final conceptual breakthrough. You have to put in the time & work, and go really deep.

And, if one has the latitude to wait that long, the luxury to aim precisely on select few targets, the permission to fail without catastrophic demise...
The way to get all of those is to do it as a side project. That's why so many big things have started as side projects.

Indeed, you're right. You've been a long-term advocate on this matter. Without making excuses, one point to consider is the pursuit of side projects in and of itself is indicative of optionality in allocating finite resources.
