One thing I've learned as an adult that I didn't realize as a kid is how precisely you have to aim at a goal to hit it. If you choose to optimize something even slightly off to the side, you'll sometimes achieve almost nothing toward your intended goal.

Agreed. And this softens the impact of the phenomenon in your 1st statement: One may miss the mark, but the effort can lead to other positive opportunities if one stays on one’s toes. IOW successful pivots.

It seems to me that people who choose complex tasks of their own free will, in essence, are entrepreneurs and are more likely to succeed.

I agree and I would also like to add that if you are enjoying what you are doing, you are already successful than people who are unhappy even in decent jobs.

when enviroment is setting someone back. All they move is hindered towards the goal. Can one keep off to survive ..and to live.. And stop the goal that we enhave mass development.
