One thing I've learned as an adult that I didn't realize as a kid is how precisely you have to aim at a goal to hit it. If you choose to optimize something even slightly off to the side, you'll sometimes achieve almost nothing toward your intended goal.

That’s a really great description. I guess a large majority of smart people end up drifting along in the right direction but not able to learn to identify the right paas that could help score a goal. Or maybe that’s just me.

I believe the alternating periods help choose what to be precise at. If you are too precise at a specific thing from the start you'll keep your possibilities narrow without exploring better things you can be precise at.
