One thing I've learned as an adult that I didn't realize as a kid is how precisely you have to aim at a goal to hit it. If you choose to optimize something even slightly off to the side, you'll sometimes achieve almost nothing toward your intended goal.

That's how FB ads work as well. If you optimize for traffic, you won't get any conversions.

thank you @paulg for the kindly reminder! For a while at age of 32 to 40, I stop being disciplined and was irresponsible (with now at age of 45, looking back) about my life in simply doing what I felt like it, and things that I did had not much relationship to each other.

For example, if you want to learn a lot, but the thing you choose to optimize is grades. Many people implicitly treat learning and getting good grades as identical, but they are surprisingly far apart. http://paulgraham.com/lesson.html

Also important is whether or not it is truly*your* goal, or one you merely adopted based on social pressure

Which goes to show that picking the right goal to aim for is very important.

Reminds me of this point from @sama about people who plan to build an intermediate company before working on their real aim of building rockets https://blog.ycombinator.com/sam-altman-on-choosing-projects-creating-value-and-finding-purpose/ …pic.twitter.com/f7vq8eep3I

Unfortunately if you don't have a network already and especially if not a white male, "building rockets now" doesn't work because nobody on Sand Hill will believe you can do it. You'll waste 100 hours pitching + 200 hours in transit and get $0. So you build something else first.
