This statement was plausible in 2013. How does one make it with a straight face in 2020?https://twitter.com/KentBeck/status/1267493453878837253 …

I've seen people trashing Mark Zuckerberg as evil and greedy. A simpler story works for me. He is profoundly unprepared for the power he wields. I'm not sure who *would* be prepared. At this critical juncture he is making mistakes with worldwide consequences.

Asking yourself this question might make the situation clearer: what would you do if you were the CEO of Facebook?

I do, a fair bit. I don't envy Zuck's position. It's the remark by Beck that I commented on because I find absurd. Zuck had a decade to get less than "profoundly" unprepared; he can get the best advisors money can buy; he has boards (and people eager to be on them); etc.

Some problems are so hard that they can absorb an arbitrary amount of preparation. Imagine the reaction if you told a mathematician "You've been working on number theory for ten years. It should be a lot easier now."

fiduciary obligations to shareholders probably are the biggest culprit... would it be even possible to take any meaningful correction measure on FB today w/o seriously impacting revenues or margins? how would investors react? but what if new legislation forced FB in that sense?

There's an inf'ly-wide chasm between "unprepared" and "prepared", which are the only two poles Beck considers. After ten years, number theory would still be just hard but they'd be better at it. (Greg LeMond: "It doesn't get easier, you just get faster.") Has Zuck gotten better?

The problem is not how Mark wields his power. He's probably doing a better job than most of us would. The problem is that he has too much power.

‘Who should be the arbiter of truth’ is a hard problem only because the answer puts them out of business. If they solved the business model problem, one of scale, decision making would be simpler.

Actually, @paulg, on reflection, I'm pretty pissed. Your 100s of followers think you've schooled me, but I've been working on hard problems for over 25 years. They haven't become easier. But I've learned a lot, accomplished a lot, and gotten a lot better. Take a hike on this.

I agree. I think everyone who is saying it’s an easy problem to solve - they really don’t understand the true complexity of this problem and ramifications of taking a wrong turn

Facebooks problems arent as complex as many make it seem, they stem from Facebook’s drive to be a news media platform. They got into that business willingly and it poisoned so much of the content and community, while making them a boatload of money. Now they see the consequences.
