One problem with saying that we should only listen to experts is that new ideas often come from outsiders. Where an idea came from is one predictor of its validity, but no more than that. And in some fields it's a rather bad predictor.

But how do outsiders build the same level of conviction? Technically the insiders have better access to ‘customers’ or knowledge.

When experts in a field start referencing from their peers and focus on seeking validity, only from their peers, what we get - Echo Chambers. These "customers" are actually those non-experts, or outsider perspective, from which fresh knowledge is derived.

Yeah - and a problem is that the word "expert" is used in a way that conflates domain-special training and competence. For many problems, domain-general competence is highly relevant.https://twitter.com/StefanFSchubert/status/1259090089742872576 …

Two key senses of "expert" often get conflated May mean a person who: 1) Has specialised knowledge 2) Makes superior judgements Conflating these senses implies that 1 and 2 are identical But it's possible to make superior judgements thanks to domain-general ability (eg IQ) ->

I guess that depends on the field? New comers to a field bring new ideas, but still requires focus and studying the field to an extent. I would prefer if surgeries are still performed and advised by experts
