If the only way cofounders can stop arguing is by making up artificial rules about who's in charge of what, like kids drawing a line across a room and saying "stay on your side," the startup is probably doomed unless one leaves.

What's the way to organize work if you have founders with considerable overlap in expertise?

It's best to have cofounders with whom you had a fistfight over a bobsled when you were 5 years old. You know what's what.

Making roles clear reduces noise and brings out the signal - and makes collaboration more effective and fun. Chaos can be a breeding ground for conflict. But probably does not help if source of conflict is that people hate each other.

Helps a lot if the cofounders have a completely different set of strengths. There’s a mutual respect that builds up over time and makes it possible.

Couldn’t agree more. Reinforces that complimentary skill sets of the cofounders help the startup move forward without worrying to overstep on one another.

Also, drawing artificial an unflexible turf boundaries gives up one of the main advantages of HAVING a cofounder. Namely COLLABORATION. So its kinda worst of both worlds :)

Do you think founders with overlapping skill sets can survive? Or do founders need to have very distinct skills?
