It's great for cofounders to have separate territories, but the border should be organic and determined by complementary expertise, not artificially imposed to prevent disputes.

If the only way cofounders can stop arguing is by making up artificial rules about who's in charge of what, like kids drawing a line across a room and saying "stay on your side," the startup is probably doomed unless one leaves.

True, synergy among the co-founders is the most important thing. One of our co-founders almost buried us, until we replaced that person, and the company skyrocketed ever since.
