Something I didn't realize till I explained it to my kids: shopping malls were like Amazon when they were first invented. You could buy everything (by 1975 standards of everything).

I just explained Amazon to someone who had *no idea* of it being the worlds online megastore. Best part: this person is 40 years old and works in tech. His mind was blown

Very true - and department stores did that before - and catalogues before that too. It is a theme of retail to 'bring everything together in one place' - which is why the future of physical retail depends on the discovery of a new purpose...more like brand temples.

Definetly, whether you like it or not retail, the high street and shopping centres, need to "create experiences" and reasons to go there. Multi use public spaces, inspirational architecture and design, and use of non invasive IoT could be a start.

And once upon a time big box stores displaced mom-and-pop stores much like Amazon is displacing big box.

It's hard to describe what shopping malls/arcades have become over the past 15 years.
