Instead of always thinking "How can we force users to sign up?" it might be worthwhile at least trying to ask "How much can we enable users to do without signing up?"

Isn't that generally a trap anyway? I always assume they hope you will forget to cancel, and that they make it hard/annoying to cancel free trails.

Lead capture and owning customers. Two concepts that have always sounded to me like "we sell to herds, not to people". Try to create the product so that the customer owns the relationship, and you'll have much happier customers.

I like Microsoft’s sign in system when you use their Authenticator app. You get a notification on your phone, prove your identity biometricly, then you get logged in.
