It was a crazy idea, but they wouldn't have discovered Twitch if they hadn't done it. This showed us that "build something you yourself want" works even when what you want is to walk around with a camera on your head 24/7.

classic innovators dilemma too. this obviously sucked to begin with but was cool enough and had passionate enough people driving it that it exploded under the noses of those who (you might think) should have thought of it first.
Definition of doing unscalable things first to find demand
This is a survivor bias alert message. Many people "build something you yourself want" few will ever turn into something successful. More important is the rich people you know and your connection to them. (But that is not as romantic and idyllic so we will not talk of it).
