Something I told my 8 yo: If you do creative work, try to avoid situations where people with less ability than you can tell you what to do, or edit your work.

There’s a fundamental flaw in meritocracy: who decides one’s ability? Better way to put is would be, “when you’re doing something creative, listen to anyone who offers his advice but do what you think is best because you’re the only judge of your work”
With him I was talking about cases where there's no uncertainty, because the people doing the dictating and editing make no claim to ability. E.g. when corporate executives cut something from a script because it might offend China.

Paul, this might be the 1st take I can recall vehemently disagreeing with you on. It’s 1 of the reasons why Google, Apple, FB & Quibi have all failed at content. You need “dumb” people to be all in on your creation too, because they represent that vast majority of the audience.
