The intellectual <-> activist tradeoff is real IMO. There's a conflict between the styles of thinking that motivate you to pursue a goal with vigor, and the styles of thinking that let you effectively determine the right goal to pursue. Ignorance, yes, but there's also the willful suspension of disbelief, ingrained social/economic mis-incentives, a complete lack of curiosity, and a laziness of the brain that would rather appeal to authority than seek out the truth.
