Interestingly, there are several senses in which this is true. I think you're talking about diversity of opinion. But it's also true that you're not an expert on a topic till you're able to notice mistakes in books.

A few years ago now, I ordered a book, looked forward to it, recieved it, and in the preface or beginning the author said that 'tuple' rhymes with 'couple'. I put the book down. Still look at the spine sometimes.

If you keep up to date with the best ideas in your field, others will ask you for advice and information, even if these ideas did not come from you. I feel communication skills and the ability to present complicated ideas in an easily understandable way makes lot of difference.
