They seem to do well with Unity3D + C#. C# in itself is not optimal for kids as such, but when combined with an attractive, fun and real-time 3D environment that they can tweak and move around in, it makes the language features that much more engaging.

Why not something more basic that achieves the same result? I think part of the reason why people struggle to succeed at innovation is that too many entrepreneurs want to take shortcuts by using open source. It’s often better to be willing to start from scratch.

I’d start with really basic logic capabilities. True/False, branches and decision blocks. You can do most of this with flow charting, so a visual tool is possible.

I think that's a very interesting thread to pull. I just introduced logo to my 6yo and I think that the visuals really play an interesting role there. What kinda of graphics capabilities do you think would be killer? 3d?
