I think the root of the problem here is that the reporter is confusing asking for information about what's popular with asking for advice about what to invest in. VCs also ask their preteen children about what's popular. But they don't ask them for investment advice.

Yeah. Though even then it’s common to look at services like AppAnnie. I believe something like that is how WhatsApp found Sequoia. I suspect the reporter is also clumping together all VCs here into one. Many really terrible VCs from firms with names you have never have heard of maybe in fact asking her for investment advice...
