I have a similar approach and just started with 11yo who'd been asking a lot lately. And no surprise, 8yo is interested now he sees his older brother doing it. So far 8yo is mostly using plot to create pixel art while 11yo codes the game.

This is a good rule for many things. I’m a musician and have waited till my kids ask me to teach them to play instruments. It makes it a joy and not a duty.
