As I was taking a tea break, I found I was looking forward to going back to work. Asked myself why. Because my program had a bug in it. Why would a bug make one more excited to work? Because it would probably be straightforward to catch, and satisfying to fix.

What people fear and stress over are the cutthroat deadlines and how a bug introduces uncertainty in time management, it can be as quick as a 5 minutes fix but it could take weeks to track down. Playing detective and flexing brain muscles is fun for most geeks (noobs included).

I wish I had this positive attitude towards debugging. I get frustrated because I want to build as fast as I can, and a bug obviously slows me down

It's a bit like people correcting you online for grammatical mistakes, misspellings, or factual inaccuracies. Except, this is self correction. So, there's improvement without ego hassles.

When I was programming a lot and knew it was finally time for bed, I would always try to stop in the middle of fixing and easy bug. That way in the morning I had an easy quick win to get me back in the flow.

Sometimes, I get excited and it becomes hard for me to sleep...

What are your favorite debugging techniques? For hard bugs, I usually end up doing a binary search between a know good state (a previous version or a minimal version of the feature) and the bad state
