A big source of trolling and divisiveness is the Twitter algo. A hyper aggressive partisan tweet is easily met with engagment via comments and thus propagation by the algorithm
It's not just Twitter. Like many businesses, Twitter optimizes for what people like, and the horrible truth is, people like to be indignant.

Im an optimist, so I think most people want to get along but there is a small, loud, intolerant minority that thrive on social and regular media, in large part due to the way social optimizes for engagement.
