I don't know if school programming classes do this, but kids like writing games so much that if I were teaching one, I'd just have them write games for the first several years. (Plus you can sneak practically anything into games.)

Here's a problem I've run into with my kids: games are *so* good now (graphics esp) that they get discouraged that whatever they write isn't going to be "good". When I was starting on Apple ][ the games I played weren't so much of a leap, so it felt worth trying.
I have a couple tricks for dealing with this. One is to emphasize that they're in control, and can change anything about the game. Another is to focus on velocity rather than position: in just one day with 10 loc we added x new thing.
