Bored on a long car ride, I wanted to see how long it would take me to code and deploy a fully debugged server that increments a counter in a file and write it back.

I once had to write code on a phone, after HN mistook investor usage on Demo Day for a DDoS attempt and started ignoring the venue's IP address. I had to log into HN on a phone and paste a fix into the repl. This looks a lot more civilized.

Yeah. It was handy, though slightly dangerous, to be able to paste updates into the running server. Also great for doing queries.

I happened upon http://repl.it when an editor at O'Reilly asked ne to do a 97 Things article. I chose Java race conditions. I was looking for a simple sandbox for readers to play with the code. I had no idea who was backing http://repl.it , but saw the quality.
