I don't know if school programming classes do this, but kids like writing games so much that if I were teaching one, I'd just have them write games for the first several years. (Plus you can sneak practically anything into games.)

Do kids get excited by building text games? My brother wanted to do cool graphics right away, he's used to playing AAA video games. Would like to find something exciting. Scratch didn't do it.
