Why is it that we’ll pay $39 a month for the millionth repeat of a fitness model doing squats and pushups but we won’t pay $10 a month for quality, daily journalism? I’m generalizing of course but I’m curious the psychology behind this.

The underlying "ugh" stopping per-article purchase is that nobody has cracked easy micro-transactions online yet. Seems like a solvable problem.

There’s an opportunity where one could sign on through a universal ID system (Google or FB), have a credit card on file and pay a nominal amount (5-25 cents) to read the article. The scale of readership will make up for the low pricing

Exactly, the publishers own websites are frustrating to use. The tension between content and monetizing is on full display. Also, it is silly that often you can simply click on reader mode on a browser and the paywall is removed.
