Kids learn faster with line numbers instead of functions?
I think line numbers don't make a difference either way, but not having to learn about scope probably does make things easier at first.

Humble opinion, kids may need to learn how to think like computer. I started teaching my 12 yrs old Logic - such as variable handling, arrays, sorting and searching - and website design constructs such as basics of WebDom, HTML and CSS. Many time her brain taps out, it’s ok.
