This is by Harvard law school professor, no less. The Atlantic has put out a few pieces that do more harm than good. I wish that were not true, and I've read some good pieces there, but it is.

And imagine writing it in a country where the president pushes untested and implausible cures!

I guess it's all in details. Depends on implementation and enforcement. In general, framework to fight misinformation and Russian style propaganda would be good. In China it is the enforcement method used and power abuse that's wrong, not underlying idea to keep infospace clean.

I’m sure they just meant censoring free speech...and killing/kidnapping people who say things the party doesn’t like.

Speech control is a reality, and we have to deal with it. Identity is a core requirement for online validation, so I contributed identity resolution of many users to the W3C DID spec. The tech is easy. Convincing people that freedom matters is the difficult thing.

Internet speech control started in the UK when I was CTO and founder at #easynet in 1995. Police regularly tried to get us to monitor everything on news groups. We didn’t. Since then the number of prosections for written words has only grown. China is not an exception. @Snowden

Are you implying UK and China has same speech control?
